THON Alumni Event Fundraising Guidelines

Please adhere to the following guidelines when planning any event that benefits THON. For questions please email regionalevents@dmaig.org.

Registration
In order to receive assistance from DMAIG and THON, the event organizer must be a registered member of DMAIG and needs to provide their contact information. To become a DMAIG member, please click here.

DMAIG only advertises and assists events that are both registered and adhere to these guidelines. Both new and recurring events should be registered here.

Any alumni couples attempting to dance in THON, must register with the DMAIG Alumni Dancer Coordinator (specialprojects@dmaig.org) before fundraising.

Use of “THON”
The title of your event can be fun and inventive, but “THON” cannot be included in the name. Instead, the event can be advertised as benefitting THON.

If you are planning on creating any merchandise that includes “THON,” it must first be approved by the THON Overall Public Relations Chairperson at public.relations@thon.org.

Alcohol
The primary focus of any THON fundraising event cannot be on the sale, distribution, or consumption of alcohol, nor can any funds received from alcohol be donated to THON or DMAIG. For example, a beer pong tournament would not be an appropriate THON fundraiser. It would also not be acceptable to host a fundraiser at a bar where proceeds of an alcohol drink were donated to THON.

Please do not encourage your guests to wear THON apparel to any event that is held in a bar.

Public Relations
All press releases including fliers, pamphlets, interviews, or media promotion for a THON fundraiser must be approved by the THON Overall Public Relations Chairperson at public.relations@thon.org.

Any promotions about the event cannot associate THON with alcohol or alcohol-related activities.

Corporate Donations
In order to track, avoid duplication and properly benefit companies that donate to THON, the THON Donor and Alumni Relations Overall must be contacted before any solicitation occurs. This includes requests for money, space, time and goods. The overall can be reached at donor.alumni.relations@thon.org.

Funds
When planning an event benefitting THON, please keep in mind that expenses should not account for more than 50% of gross income.

Net proceeds should be sent to THON within a reasonable timeframe after the event occurs. In order for donations to count for a particular THON year, they must be received no later than one week before THON occurs. Please note that the deadline is earlier for alumni dancer couples and can be found in the alumni dancer packet.

When sending a donation, please note the event name, make check payable to "Penn State Dance Marathon" and send to the THON office at:

Penn State Dance Marathon
ATTN: Finance

210 HUB

University Park, PA 16802

Funds raised by alumni events can only be credited to alumni dancer couples if the event is explicitly noted as such in all descriptions, materials and advertisements. For example, “Basketball fundraiser with proceeds benefitting THON through dancers John Smith & Jane Doe.” Events hosted by Alumni Chapters cannot credit their totals to specific alumni couples.

Funds raised by alumni events can be donated and count towards the total for a Penn State student organization if the event is explicitly noted as such in all descriptions, materials and advertisements. For example, "Event X benefiting THON and crediting organization X.” Events hosted by Alumni Chapters cannot credit their totals to specific student organizations.

Four Diamonds Families
Four Diamonds families like to attend THON fundraising events when they are convenient and available. If you are interested in having a family attend or speak at your event, please contact the Four Diamonds Fund Assistant Director Linda Barry at lbarry@psu.edu.

General
Please make sure the event is safe and appropriate for all participants and spectators. As a general rule, if a THON family would NOT be supportive of the event or wear the apparel you are planning, please reconsider the fundraiser.
