$5 Million Endowment Created for Pediatric Cancer

The Four Diamonds Fund is celebrating September's designation as Childhood Cancer Awareness month by announcing the creation of a $5 million endowment for a Pediatric Cancer Experimental Therapeutics Program at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The goal is to increase this endowment to $10 million during the next three to five years.

Construction on the midstate's only children's hospital is expected to begin at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in January, giving parents a local option instead of having to travel to Philadelphia or Baltimore.

The four-story, 72-bed facility, which officials hope to open by 2012, will replace the children's wing housed on the seventh floor of the main hospital.

Penn State has 6.6 million more reasons to smile after the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon raised a record-shattering total of $6,615,318.04.

This year's total eclipsed last year's record of $5,240,385.17 by $1,374,932.87.

The 17 members of the overall committee, dressed in matching blue track suits, stood on the diamond-shaped stage and each revealed a part of the total by raising posters.

THON Express arrives at BJC

The snow, sleet, rain and freezing temperatures were not enough to keep one group from making the 135-mile trip from the Hershey Medical Center to the Bryce Jordan Center -- on foot.

Sixteen runners and 10 supporters left the seventh floor of Hershey Medical Center around 6 p.m. last night as part of the second Thon Express. The group arrived at the BJC at about 7:45 p.m.

The four-year-old Webcast of the annual Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), produced by students in the College of Communications, attracted thousands of online visitors to the event this past weekend--and helped spur online donations to the event.

The Webcast attracted some 12,000 unique connections during the 46-hour event from 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. Most of the visitors were alumni, students and family members of the dancers.
