Please help DMAIG assist Four Diamonds patients this year by providing books!

Attention, Alumni! Are You Looking for A Way to Support The Four Diamonds Fund as an Alumnus/a?

Join the Dance Marathon AIG's Alumni Give Back Program by donating children's books to the kids at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey. Four Diamonds Fund patients and their families spend many hours in the hospital and it is our hope that these books can help to promote a fun, learning environment during their visit. All donations will be placed in patient playrooms, waiting areas and the neonatal intensive care units. The Dance Marathon AIG looks forward to donating these books on behalf of all alumni to show support to The Four Diamonds Fund and the families who will be using the new hospital, as they continue on their journey to conquer childhood cancer.

How you can help: Please consider donating new or gently used plastic or cardboard books. This will allow for frequent cleaning of all the pages to help eliminate germs. Please feel free to include a note in the books but please refrain from any religious messages.

All books can be sent to:

4 The Cure - Sunday November 11, 2012

On November 4, 2006 our lives changed forever. Our son Lachlan was diagnosed with a rare but very aggressive malignant tumor of the orbit of the eye called rhabdomyosarcoma. We began an exhaustive schedule of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The six months that followed his diagnosis were a very challenging time for our family. We struggled with life and death scenarios with our youngest son.

In addition to the stress of this situation we struggled with how we would deal with the day to day reality of his condition. While we valued the peace of mind that our insurance would cover a large amount of our necessary expenses, it was the value of the people we encountered at The Children’s Hospital at the Hershey Medical Center that had greater meaning to us. Through our faith in God and the help of the people at Four Diamonds Fund we were able cope with all the challenges, and without them, we would not be where we are today.

Since 1972, the Four Diamonds Fund has provided financial support to over 2,000 families with a pediatric cancer patient being treated at The Children’s Hospital at Hershey Medical Center. Above and beyond the direct expenses associated with cancer treatment, the foundation assists families by covering ancillary expenses including gas, lodging, meals, and household utilities. As if this were not enough, the foundation is responsible for providing the Children’s Hospital at the Hershey Medical Center with medical personnel and grants for pediatric cancer research.

As of April 12 2012 Lachlan has reached the 5 year milestone and living cancer free! We endure with cautious optimism, but are so grateful for the support we received from friends, family and the Four Diamonds Fund through Lachlan’s battle that we want to continue to give back to those who have supported us and also do anything possible to furthering the effort to conquer childhood cancer. In that spirit, we have established the 4 The Cure Foundation. Our mission: To honor and champion the valiant young warriors and their families courageous battle against pediatric cancer, and to help raise awareness of the Four Diamonds Fund.

For our inaugural year, the 4 The Cure Foundation will hold 4 The Cure. This event will consist of a 4 mile run and a shorter1 Mile Fun Run/Walk that will be held on the grounds of the PA Renaissance Faire (approximately 16 miles from the Hershey Medical Center). The event will have a medieval setting in honor of the foundation of the Four Diamonds Fund-Chris Millard’s story, the Four Diamonds Founders son, who lost his battle with cancer in 1972. Before Chris passed he penned a story of his battle in an Arthurian setting which we hope to bring to life in a unique and powerful event, to subsequently help raise awareness of the Four Diamonds Fund and support the mission of the 4 The Cure Foundation.

Without the Four Diamonds of courage, wisdom, honesty and strength and the people that embody them, we would not be where we are today. Lachlan’s journey has inspired us to give back and all of the proceeds from this event will be donated directly to the Four Diamonds Fund. This is where you come in, as there are many families who need our help. By participating as a Sponsor or a Diamond Level sponsor of your choice, your company’s donation can go a long way in providing hope for the additional 600 families that receive support from this foundation every year.

We hope that you will support the Four Diamonds Fund through 4 The Cure. Your support is vital to those families that are being touched by cancer. Please keep in mind, that yesterday, today and tomorrow more families are changed by the same devastating news we heard on November 4, 2006.

Hope Express 2013: Call for Runners!

At this time seven years ago, I was trying to put together what was—at that point—nothing more than a pipe dream. My lovely bride Connie and I were determined to make this dream a reality. We had no idea what we were doing at the time and could never envision what it has become today. There have been many surprises along those 135 miles and we are proud to say that every single runner who has run with us we now consider to be a part of our family.

What we do may only last for 24 hours, but the memories last a lifetime. There are plenty of stories to tell, but I will save those for later. What struck us the most very early on was how all of you so desperately wanted to be involved with THON again in a meaningful way. Honestly, all we wanted to do was to “pay it forward,” and pay it back for all that you did to help us after our son Gabriel was diagnosed with Leukemia.

Purely by accident, we came upon a magic formula that could help us, help THON, and help all of you to become involved again. Whenever we could we tried to mirror what THON does every year. I am not a believer in recreating the wheel. It has been a winning team of runners, moralers, and volunteers that have transformed an idea into something beautiful. Every year I have to pinch myself, because none of it seems real, nor can I believe that Connie and I started all of this, but it is all of you that deserve the credit. Without the undying support of all of you this would have never happened.

Now, we need at least fourteen crazy people who think that running at night in the middle of winter—on roads they have never traveled, with a bunch of people they never met—is a good idea. I told you this was crazy! You can go to our website at www.thehopeexpress.org and click on event information and you will find a drop-down menu that includes “become a runner.” Complete this form, and you'll be one step closer to becoming a part of HE 2013. We will accept applications up until 11:59 pm on Sept 30th.

We will review all of the applications in detail. Take this process seriously, because trust me, we do. After we have received your application we will conduct a phone interview with you. It is about five questions, through which we try to get to know you better. In the first week of October we will announce who will be the finalists. At that point the finalists will fundraise for a month, all vying for a spot on the team.

In the first week of November, the selection committee will meet. The committee is a group of people who are Four Diamonds Family members. We review your applications, your phone interview, and your fundraising to determine who will be on the team. It is a very long night. I felt that it was very important that those people who you helped be the ones to determine whether you made the team or not. Trust me when I tell you that it is more like torture. We wish you could all run, but it simply is not possible.

Shortly after this meeting we will announce the team and four alternates. For those of you picked as alternates, you are a part of the team as well. Every year we have used at least one alternate. Alternates will not make the trip to Penn State unless someone drops out, but they are invited to “runner’s weekend.”

We are hoping to make this the best year yet. I cannot wait to see those applications coming across my desk. Good luck to all of you, and I will be meeting some of you soon.

Sincerely,
Hank Angus
